About this place
Strashnoto Ezero Shelter stands immediately beside the northern shore of Strashnoto Lake beneath the Kupenite peaks and Popova Kapa in the Malyovitsa section of Rila.
It is an important point on the European E4 route and one of Rila's most recognisable high-mountain refuges.
Access
FROM MALYOVITSA: One classic approach starts from the Malyovitsa resort and training-centre area and passes via Yonchevo Lake.
FROM YONCHEVO LAKE: Continue on the marked route toward Strashnoto Lake as the terrain becomes steeper and rockier.
FROM MALYOVITSA HUT: A marked connection reaches the shelter in approximately 2 hours.
E4: From the shelter the route continues through Popovokapski Pass toward Kobilino Branishte and the Ribni Lakes.
Important
The shelter is self-service and provides no food or permanent staff.
The high terrain around the Kupenite requires care in wet rock, fog and strong winds.
Snow can create serious avalanche conditions. Summer trail descriptions must not automatically be used as winter routes.
