About this place
BAK Shelter, also known as Orlovets or Granitna Voda, lies in the rugged alpine cirque surrounded by Orlovets, Zliya Zab, Lovnitsa and Kamilata peaks in northwestern Rila.
It is one of the historic centres of Bulgarian mountaineering and an important emergency refuge in the Malyovitsa region.
Access
CLASSIC APPROACH: From Malyovitsa Hut continue uphill through the Malyovitsa valley toward the Second Terrace area.
FROM THE SECOND TERRACE: The route branches toward the BAK cirque and gradually enters increasingly rocky alpine terrain.
TIME: From Malyovitsa Hut the shelter normally takes approximately 1.5–2 hours in snow-free summer conditions.
AREA: The shelter is an important starting point for Orlovets, Lovnitsa, Zliya Zab and several technical alpine routes.
Important
The shelter is very small and should not be treated as guaranteed planned accommodation.
Do not rely on water at the shelter; carry enough with you.
The surrounding terrain is steep, rocky and alpine. Routes to several nearby summits require significant mountain or climbing experience.
Snow, ice, strong wind or poor visibility can make the area extremely hazardous.
