Route
Botev Peak (2,376 m) is the highest summit in the Balkan Mountains. The approach from Kalofer via Rai Hut brings together forest, waterfalls, rocky slopes and the open high-mountain summit area in one long hike.
Rai Hut and Rayskoto Praskalo waterfall are the natural highlight of the first half of the route. Above them, the scenery becomes more rugged and gradually shifts toward the steep southern slopes of the Botev massif.
In clear weather, the upper mountain opens broad views toward Dzhendema, the Central Balkan, Sredna Gora and the Rhodopes, while the summit itself widens the horizon in every direction.
This is a serious full-day route with substantial elevation gain. The mix of forest, Rayskoto Praskalo, the rocky Tarzan Trail and the exposed summit makes it one of the most memorable approaches to Botev.
Access
From Kalofer, reach the Panitsite area, where the main walking section begins. Take the route toward Rai Hut.
After the initial descent toward the Tundzha River, a steeper forest climb follows, and higher up the route reaches more open ground. At Dolen Paradzik, follow the signs toward Rai Hut rather than taking the branching routes.
Continue through Dzhendema to Rai Hut. This is the best place for a longer rest and the last reliable opportunity to check your water, the weather and the daylight remaining before the summit.
From Rai Hut, continue toward Botev Peak. A short distance beyond the hut, reach the junction for the Tarzan Trail and take the steep route uphill toward the summit.
The Tarzan Trail climbs in switchbacks across the rocky slope. Metal cables assist several sections. Move slowly and keep distance from other hikers, especially on wet rock or when the trail is busy.
Beyond the steepest section, the gradient gradually eases. Continue across the open upper terrain toward Botev Peak and the meteorological station.
⚠️ In low cloud or strong wind, navigation in the upper section can become difficult. Follow the marking and GPX track rather than relying only on visibility toward the summit.
BGMountainGuide
The present name Botev was officially adopted in 1950. Before that, the peak was known as Yumrukchal, and in 1942 it was temporarily renamed Ferdinand Peak. The area is also associated with an old Troyan cycle of legends about Krali Marko.
Navigation
Panitsite – start of the main walking section.
Dolen Paradzik – important junction on the approach to Rai Hut.
Rai Hut – key intermediate point for rest and water.
Junction for the Tarzan Trail – the most serious ascent begins here.
Tarzan Trail – steep switchbacks and sections with metal cables.
Above Dzhendema – the terrain becomes gentler but remains exposed.
Botev Peak – final destination.
💧 Water: there are two fountains on the Panitsite → Rai Hut section; Mechata Glava can have weak flow, with a second source farther on. Refill again at Rai Hut—there is no dependable water on the Tarzan Trail before Botev Peak.
