Route
Vezhen Peak (2,198 m) is the highest summit in the Zlatishko–Teteven section and one of the most massive peaks in the Balkan Mountains. Its broad summit contrasts with the steep northern slopes dropping toward the Tsarichina Reserve.
The classic approach from Vezhen Hut gradually moves from old conifer forest to open high-mountain slopes and the main ridge.
In clear weather, the summit offers wide views toward the Central Balkan, the Teteven region, the northern valleys and distant mountains to the south.
The route via Kamenna Porta gains height progressively and, in normal summer conditions, is a hiking route without mandatory technical sections.
Access
From Vezhen Hut, head south–southeast along the broad marked trail through the coniferous forest. Approximately 1 km from the hut, close to the upper tree line, the routes begin to separate. For the main summer route, follow the blue markings along the Kamenen / Klisurski trail. The path traverses the northeastern slopes of Vezhen and gradually climbs to Kamenna Porta. At the saddle, join the red ridge markings and continue west toward Vezhen Peak. Two alternatives also exist: a summer route through Kasadzhika traversing the northwestern slopes, and a direct pole-marked winter route climbing between the two summer trails. For normal summer navigation, the GPX track in the app follows the Kamenna Porta route.
Navigation
Vezhen Hut – 1622 m, starting point.
The blue, red and yellow routes initially share the same general approach through the forest.
The three alternatives separate approximately 1 km south of the hut.
MAIN SUMMER OPTION – BLUE MARKINGS:
Follow the blue markings along the Kamenen / Klisurski trail.
The trail traverses the northeastern slopes of Vezhen with a gradual ascent.
The route reaches Kamenna Porta.
At Kamenna Porta, join the red ridge markings toward Vezhen Peak.
Kamenna Porta → Vezhen Peak: approximately 15–30 min depending on pace.
SECOND SUMMER OPTION – YELLOW MARKINGS / KASADZHIKA:
The right-hand summer trail makes a wide traverse across the northwestern slopes.
The route passes through the Kasadzhika area.
Near Kasadzhika, another trail branches toward Benkovski Hut via Papa and Koncheto.
For Vezhen, continue toward the western part of the broad summit plateau and then follow the ridge markings to the summit.
This option is also intended for summer conditions.
THIRD OPTION – DIRECT WINTER ROUTE:
The direct route climbs between the two summer traverses.
It is marked with iron poles and dense winter markings.
The footpath itself is less distinct and can disappear among grass, juniper and rocks.
After reaching the broad summit plateau, approximately 1.5 km remains to Vezhen Peak.
Do not choose this option simply because it appears shorter on the map – it is primarily the winter line.
IMPORTANT: the two traversing summer routes can cross avalanche-prone terrain during winter.
In normal dry summer conditions, the main blue route via Kamenna Porta contains no technical climbing sections.
Vezhen Peak – 2198 m.
In fog, use the markings, map and GPX track carefully because the broad summit plateau can make orientation difficult.
💧 Water: Vezhen Hut is the last reliable refill point. There is no dependable water source on the climb to Vezhen Peak.
