Route
The traverse between Vasil Levski Hut and Rai Hut links two of the most interesting valleys below Botev Peak without climbing the summit itself.
The route begins in the green Stara Reka Valley, rises above the forest line and crosses the southern slopes of the massif. Beech forest, open pasture and deep river gullies alternate along the way.
As the route approaches Southern Dzhendem, the relief becomes more dramatic, and toward the end the Rai cliffs and Rai Hut come into view.
This is a long but beautiful connecting hike for people who want to cross the interior of the Central Balkan rather than simply climb a summit.
Access
From Vasil Levski Hut, head almost east beside the ski slope and climb through the beech and fir forest. After approximately 30 minutes, reach Govedarnika and emerge above the tree line. Continue along the traversing trail above Golyamata Reka and after approximately another 30 minutes reach the major junction at Dyuza / Petolachkata. Follow the blue-marked trail toward Rai Hut. The path descends into Derindere, crosses the stream and climbs toward the watershed between Derindere and Kanlidere. It then descends toward Bashmandra. From Bashmandra, follow the clearly defined blue-marked trail as it traverses the southern slopes of Botev Peak high above Southern Dzhendem. Cross several mountain streams and pass near Derekliyska Cave and Spasitelnata Skala. After the final open traverses, the path joins the Tarzan Trail. Continue downhill toward Rai Hut, cross the Praskalska River and reach the meadow beside the hut.
Navigation
Vasil Levski Hut – 1351 m, starting point.
Vasil Levski Hut → Govedarnika: about 30 min.
The initial section climbs through beech and fir forest using several short switchbacks.
Govedarnika – point where the route emerges above the tree line.
Govedarnika → Dyuza / Petolachkata: about 30 min.
Dyuza / Petolachkata – major mountain junction with several different routes.
IMPORTANT: follow the blue markings toward Rai Hut.
Do not follow the green-marked route toward Botev Peak.
Derindere – the trail descends into the shallow valley and crosses the stream.
After Derindere, a short climb leads to the watershed between Derindere and Kanlidere.
Bashmandra / Kanlimandra – stone building and one of the most important landmarks on the route.
Beyond Bashmandra, the clearly defined trail begins a long traverse across the southern slopes of Botev Peak.
Southern Dzhendem lies below the trail. Some slopes are steep and require careful walking.
The route crosses the four main streams forming the Haydushka River.
After heavy rainfall, some stream crossings may become more difficult.
Derekliyska Cave – characteristic landmark in the second half of the route.
Numerous small waterfalls and cascades can be seen along the trail.
Spasitelnata Skala – a large isolated rock providing natural shelter on its southern side.
Beyond Spasitelnata Skala, the route traverses open and steep grassy slopes.
Tarzan Trail junction – important junction shortly before Rai Hut.
Do not turn uphill along the Tarzan Trail toward Botev Peak; continue toward Rai Hut.
The area provides panoramic views toward Rayskite Skali and Rayskoto Praskalo.
Praskalska River – final significant stream crossing before the hut.
Rai Hut – 1422 m, final destination.
Total time: approximately 4:00–4:30 h in normal summer conditions.
💧 Water: fill up at Vasil Levski Hut; the next reliable point is Rai Hut. Natural water is crossed along the route and should be treated.
