Description

Botev Peak (2,376 m) is the highest summit in the Balkan Mountains, and the approach from Vasil Levski Hut via Dyuza offers a more gradual way into the upper part of the massif.

The route begins in the green Stara Reka Valley and slowly leaves the forest behind. Above Dyuza, the terrain opens into broad grassy slopes typical of the Central Balkan.

In clear weather, the upper route offers views toward Southern Dzhendem, the surrounding summits and distant mountains to the south.

The hike is long and gains substantial elevation, but it does not have the rocky character of the Tarzan Trail. The main challenge is the sustained climb and the long time spent on exposed terrain.

Access

How to get there

From Vasil Levski Hut, take the trail beginning behind the hut. The first section climbs steeply in switchbacks through mixed forest. After leaving the tree line, reach the rocky rise of Govedarnika. Continue east and southeast. Near the steep rocks, the winter pole-marked route toward Mlechen Chal branches away; do not follow it for this summer route. Stay on the well-defined summer trail, which traverses more gradually toward Dyuza / Petolachkata. At the major junction at Dyuza, follow the green-marked route toward Botev Peak and Botev Shelter. The trail traverses below the high ridge and successively crosses the Derindere, Kanlidere and Hayduka areas, passing near Pobita Glava. After the long traverse, reach the saddle at Botev Shelter. From the shelter, continue uphill following the red markings and marker poles. Numerous switchbacks climb the open slope and reach Botev Peak at 2376 m in approximately 40–60 minutes.

Interesting Fact

The present name Botev was officially adopted in 1950. Before that, the peak was known as Yumrukchal, and in 1942 it was temporarily renamed Ferdinand Peak. The area is also associated with an old Troyan cycle of legends about Krali Marko.

Navigation

Key points

1

Vasil Levski Hut – 1351 m, starting point.

2

Vasil Levski Hut → Govedarnika: approximately 30–50 min. This is one of the steepest sections of the route.

3

The initial climb follows switchbacks through mixed beech and fir forest.

4

Govedarnika – rocky rise above the tree line and an important landmark.

5

Beyond Govedarnika, the winter pole-marked route toward Mlechen Chal branches away. Do not follow it for this summer route.

6

Continue along the summer traverse toward Dyuza / Petolachkata.

7

Vasil Levski Hut → Dyuza: approximately 1:00–1:30 h depending on pace.

8

Dyuza / Petolachkata – major junction. Follow the signs toward Botev Peak and Botev Shelter.

9

From Dyuza toward Botev, the route mainly follows green trail markings.

10

Do not follow the blue-marked route toward Rai Hut.

11

Do not take the route toward Ravnets Hut.

12

Beyond Dyuza begins a long traverse below the main ridge with a much gentler gradient.

13

Derindere – first significant river valley crossed along the traverse.

14

Kanlidere – another valley crossed farther along the route.

15

Hayduka – subsequent drainage area before the approach toward Botev Shelter.

16

Livestock and shepherd dogs may be encountered in the high pastures. Pass calmly and avoid approaching the animals.

17

Pobita Glava Peak provides a characteristic landmark near the route.

18

Dyuza → Botev Shelter: approximately 1:30–2:00 h.

19

The terrain between Dyuza and the shelter is not technical, but the distance and repeated valley crossings can become tiring.

20

After rain, some stream crossings and grassy slopes may be wet and slippery.

21

Botev Shelter – approximately 2050 m, the main intermediate point before the final ascent.

22

The shelter is a suitable place for a rest and replenishing water.

23

Botev Shelter → Botev Peak: about 40–60 min.

24

Above the shelter, follow the red markings and marker poles uphill across the open slope.

25

The final ascent is steep and tiring but contains no technical climbing passages.

26

In dense fog, do not shortcut the switchbacks and remain close to the trail markings and GPX track.

27

Botev Peak – 2376 m, final destination.

28

💧 Water: fill up at Vasil Levski Hut. The next reliable points are Botev Shelter and the tourist accommodation on the summit; water from gullies on the high section should not be relied upon without treatment.
