Route
Vezhen Peak (2,198 m) is the highest summit in the Zlatishko–Teteven section. The ascent from Ribaritsa is a major full-day hike that begins low in the Zavodna River valley and gradually reaches the main ridge of the Balkan Mountains.
As far as Vezhen Hut, the route is mostly forested. Above the hut, its character changes sharply toward open slopes and high-mountain terrain.
In clear weather, the summit offers panoramas toward the Central Balkan, Ribaritsa, the northern valleys and distant parts of southern Bulgaria.
The substantial elevation gain and long walking time make this a physically serious route. Weather can change quickly in the upper mountain, so enough time should be left for the descent.
Access
From the parking area beside the Zavodna River, continue uphill along the broad gravel road. Use the signed shortcut that cuts one of the large bends. After rejoining the road, continue toward the bridge, fountain and information boards. Leave the road here and follow the blue markings toward Vezhen Hut. A long steep ascent follows in switchbacks through the forest. Pass Tsarskata Pochivka and continue uphill. Beyond the steepest section, the gradient eases, the trail passes near Hristova Dolchina, crosses a meadow and eventually rejoins the broad road shortly before Vezhen Hut. From the hut, follow the shared marked trail uphill. Pass the yellow-route junction toward Benkovski Hut. At the next major junction, the blue trail continues toward Echo Hut and Kamenna Porta; for the direct summit route, turn right along the red markings. The terrain becomes very steep and rocky. Approximately 10 minutes later, reach the steel cable. Use it as additional support while climbing the northern ridge. After approximately 50–60 minutes, reach the broad grassy Vezhen plateau. Continue east following the marker poles for another approximately 10–20 minutes to Vezhen Peak at 2198 m. Hikers wishing to avoid the steep ridge and cable can instead use the more gradual blue summer route via Kamenna Porta or the western summer alternative.
Navigation
Parking area beside the Zavodna River — start of the walking route, at approximately 925 m elevation.
Ribaritsa → parking area: approximately 5.5 km road approach along the Zavodna River valley.
After the parking area, follow the broad gravel road.
After about 10–25 minutes, there is a signed steep shortcut trail that cuts off a large bend in the dirt road.
After another approximately 10–15 minutes, reach the important junction by a bridge, fountain, benches and information boards.
IMPORTANT: for the shorter walking route to Vezhen Hut, leave the broad road and follow the blue markings uphill.
A long and very steep switchback ascent begins from the junction.
Tsarskata Pochivka — two benches approximately 20 minutes after the start of the serious climb.
After Tsarskata Pochivka, the steep ascent continues for approximately another 30 minutes.
After the steepest section, the gradient gradually eases and the route passes by Hristova Dolchina.
A short climb follows, then a meadow and a return to the broad road.
From the final rejoining of the broad road, Vezhen Hut is approximately 5–10 minutes away.
Parking area → Vezhen Hut: approximately 2:00–2:40 h depending on pace.
Vezhen Hut — 1622 m. A suitable place for a substantial rest, water and food before the second stage.
From the hut, head uphill through the forest along the shared initial section.
About 10 minutes above the hut, the route passes through an area of old and fallen trees.
First junction — the yellow western variant branches toward Benkovski Hut and the western side of Vezhen.
Approximately 30–35 minutes after the hut, reach the second main junction.
IMPORTANT: the blue markings continue toward Echo Hut / Kamenna Porta. For the direct ascent of Vezhen, turn right following the red markings.
After the junction, the steep northern rocky ridge begins.
About 10 minutes after the junction, reach the beginning of the steel cable.
Steel cable — a long section providing additional support on the very steep slope.
The section is not a via ferrata and, in dry summer conditions, does not require specialized climbing equipment.
There are no vertical drops immediately beside the trail, but the gradient is serious and the risk of slipping increases on wet terrain.
The steep rocky ridge and cable-assisted section take approximately 50–60 minutes.
End of the cable section — arrival on the broad grassy Vezhen plateau.
After reaching the plateau, continue east toward the summit following the marker poles.
Plateau → Vezhen Peak: approximately 10–20 minutes.
Vezhen Peak — 2198 m.
Vezhen Hut → Vezhen Peak via the direct variant: approximately 1:30–2:00 h.
The entire route from parking area → hut → summit: about 4:00–4:30 h moving time; with a normal rest at the hut, allow about 4:30–5:00 h.
ALTERNATIVE EASTERN SUMMER VARIANT: from the junction above the hut, continue on the blue markings toward Kamenna Porta and then follow the red ridge toward Vezhen Peak.
The eastern variant is longer but significantly more gradual and avoids the direct rocky ridge and the steel cable.
ALTERNATIVE WESTERN SUMMER VARIANT: follow the yellow markings across the northwestern slopes and the Kasadzhika area, then reach the western part of the summit plateau.
The western variant is also more gradual than the direct northern ridge.
On descent, the direct rocky ridge places heavy strain on the knees and requires more attention. For a calmer descent, one of the two side summer variants can be used.
💧 Water: water is available on the lower approach, and the last reliable refill before the summit is Vezhen Hut. Do not rely on water above the hut.
