Description

Botev Peak (2,376 m) is the highest point in the Balkan Mountains. The ascent from Rai Hut via the Tarzan Trail is the steepest of the classic summer approaches and climbs the dramatic southern slopes above Dzhendema.

Soon above the hut, the Rai cliffs fall away below the route, while the view across Southern Dzhendem and the surrounding ridges grows wider with every step. The rocky switchbacks give the climb a strong high-mountain character.

In clear weather, the upper mountain and the summit offer panoramas toward the Central Balkan, Sredna Gora, the Rhodopes and distant parts of southern Bulgaria.

The route gains a large amount of elevation on a steep open slope. Wet rock, strong wind or thunderstorms make the climb considerably more serious.

Access

How to get there

From Rai Hut, follow the trail beside the chapel using the combined green and blue markings. After a few minutes, pass the junction toward Rayskoto Praskalo waterfall. Approximately 15–20 minutes after leaving the hut, reach the important junction for Botev Peak. The blue-marked trail continues straight toward Vasil Levski Hut, while the route to Botev turns right and steeply uphill following the green markings. The gradient increases sharply after the junction. After approximately 30 minutes, reach the first steel cable and enter the main rocky section of the Tarzan Trail. The route climbs in switchbacks across the steep slopes above Southern Dzhendem. Follow the green markings and use the steel cables for support where provided. Several passages are strongly exposed and require calm, deliberate movement. The principal rocky section ends approximately 1:30 h after leaving Rai Hut. From there, continue across the open high-mountain slopes, following the green trail markings and marker poles. In fog, do not rely on seeing the summit tower. From the end of the Tarzan Trail to Botev Peak, allow approximately another 1:00–1:15 h. The total ascent from Rai Hut to Botev Peak normally takes about 2:30–2:45 h in suitable summer conditions.

Interesting Fact

The present name Botev was officially adopted in 1950. Before that, the peak was known as Yumrukchal, and in 1942 it was temporarily renamed Ferdinand Peak. The area is also associated with an old Troyan cycle of legends about Krali Marko.

Navigation

Key points

1

Rai Hut – starting point.

2

Rai Hut → Rayskoto Praskalo junction: about 5 min.

3

Follow the main trail beside the chapel; initially the blue and green markings run together.

4

Rai Hut → Tarzan Trail junction: approximately 15–20 min.

5

IMPORTANT JUNCTION: the blue-marked trail continues straight toward Vasil Levski Hut. For Botev Peak, turn right and steeply uphill following the green markings.

6

An avalanche-warning sign shortly before the junction can be used as an additional landmark.

7

The gradient increases sharply immediately after the junction.

8

Junction → first steel cable: approximately 30 min.

9

Beginning of the Tarzan Trail – steep and rocky high-mountain terrain.

10

Beyond the first cable, the route climbs in switchbacks across the rocky slope above Southern Dzhendem.

11

Many of the steel cables mainly provide additional support, but several more exposed passages require careful movement.

12

Do not rush through the cable-assisted sections and maintain sufficient distance between hikers.

13

Wet rock significantly reduces grip and increases the difficulty of the exposed sections.

14

Strong winds can make the open rocky slopes considerably more dangerous.

15

Rai Hut → end of the main Tarzan Trail section: approximately 1:30 h.

16

Beyond the cable-assisted section, the gradient gradually becomes gentler, although a sustained open climb still remains.

17

The upper route reaches the pole-marked high-mountain terrain. Follow the marker poles toward Botev Peak.

18

At one point, a broad track bends away while the hiking markings leave it. This junction can be easy to miss in fog.

19

End of the Tarzan Trail → Botev Peak: approximately 1:00–1:15 h.

20

The final metres cross the broad open slopes of Botev and contain no technical climbing.

21

Botev Peak – 2376 m, the highest summit of the Balkan Mountains.

22

💧 Water: fill up at Rai Hut. There is no dependable drinking-water source on the Tarzan Trail; the next reliable option is the tourist accommodation on Botev Peak.
