Route
The hike from Panitsite to Rai Hut is one of the most popular routes in the Central Balkan and a beautiful way to enter the Dzhendema area.
The first part passes through forest and river valleys, while the scenery becomes increasingly open and dramatic as the hut draws closer.
The Rai cliffs, the Kalofer Kupeni and Rayskoto Praskalo waterfall gradually come into view and make the final part of the hike especially memorable.
The route is long but has no technical climbing passages in normal summer conditions. Rai Hut is an excellent destination in itself and a base for climbing Botev Peak.
Access
From Panitsite, cross the Tundzha River and follow the blue trail markings. The route immediately begins with a short but steep forest ascent to the entrance of Central Balkan National Park. Beyond this point, the trail becomes gentler and continues through forest and open terrain toward Slivkata and Paradzika. At the junction, remain on the blue-marked trail toward Rai Hut and do not take the route branching toward Botev Peak. Continue across Paradzika and Kamenlivetsa toward the valleys of Malka and Golyama Bazovitsa. Beyond the river valleys begins the most demanding section – the sustained switchback ascent through Rogacheva Gora. After leaving the forest, reach the saddle between Rayskite Skali and the Kalofer Kupen peaks. From there, follow the clearly marked trail to Rai Hut. Under normal summer conditions, allow approximately 4:00–4:30 hours from Panitsite to the hut.
Navigation
Panitsite – starting point with road access.
Tundzha River – crossed near the beginning of the route.
Panitsite → entrance of Central Balkan National Park: a short but steep initial ascent taking around 15–20 min.
Beyond the park entrance, the route becomes gentler and continues through deciduous forest.
Follow the blue trail markings toward Rai Hut.
Open pastures – a long easier section with limited shade and wide views toward the Central Balkan Mountains.
Slivkata – important landmark and junction.
IMPORTANT: at Slivkata remain on the blue-marked route toward Rai Hut. Do not take the route branching toward Botev Peak.
Paradzika ridge – the route continues across open mountain terrain.
Kamenlivetsa – transition area before descending toward the river valleys.
Malka Bazovitsa – one of the main river valleys crossed by the route.
Golyama Bazovitsa – another important crossing before the final ascent.
Water can normally be replenished in the Bazovitsa area.
Rogacheva Gora – beginning of the most demanding climb toward the hut.
The ascent through Rogacheva Gora is sustained and steep, using numerous switchbacks to gain elevation.
After rain, the soil trail and steeper sections may become slippery.
After leaving Rogacheva Gora, reach the saddle between Rayskite Skali and the Kalofer Kupen peaks.
From the saddle, only a relatively short final section remains to Rai Hut.
Rai Hut – 1422 m, final destination.
Rayskoto Praskalo waterfall lies above the hut and can be visited as a separate extension.
💧 Water: there are two fountains after the Bazovitsa area. The Mechata Glava fountain can have weak flow, with a second source about 10 minutes farther on; water is also available at Rai Hut.
