Route
The hike from Kozya Stena Hut to Echo Hut is a beautiful high-mountain section along the main ridge of the Central Balkan.
The route is not especially long, but the terrain is broken and alternates between short climbs and descents. Markova Livada, Trionite and Ushite give the hike a varied character.
The summer trail avoids the hardest rocky ridge lines and allows the traverse without mandatory technical passages. Even so, almost the entire route is exposed to wind and changing weather.
The finish around Zhelezni Vrata and Echo Hut is especially beautiful — the hut sits high beneath Yumruka with broad views over the surrounding ridges.
Access
From Kozya Stena Hut, head west following the red E3 Kom–Emine markings. The summer trail gradually gains elevation, reaches the main ridge and crosses it several times before returning to the southern slope. Continue toward Markova Livada. Beyond it, the terrain becomes rockier around Trionite. Follow the summer bypass rather than the winter route directly across the rocky ridge. The path then gradually climbs back toward the main ridge and reaches Ushite Peak (Kapudzhika). At the major junction, remain on the red-marked route toward Echo Hut. The summer trail bypasses the next rise and reaches Karchov Preslap. Continue southwest, pass the junctions from Ribaritsa and briefly cross beech forest. During the final section, do not climb the winter route over Kavladan Peak; remain on the summer trail traversing the slope. The trail reaches Zhelezni Vrata, immediately beyond which Echo Hut is located. Under normal summer conditions, allow approximately 2:20–2:45 hours.
Navigation
Kozya Stena Hut – 1536 m, starting point.
Follow the red E3 Kom–Emine markings toward Echo Hut.
The first section includes a gradual climb and several crossings between the two sides of the main ridge.
When given a choice between a ridge and summer bypass variant, follow the summer trail.
Markova Livada – important landmark before the rockier terrain.
Trionite – rocky section of the main ridge.
IMPORTANT: the standard summer trail bypasses Trionite. Do not follow the winter line directly across the rocky ridge.
Kozya Stena Hut → area where the summer and ridge variants approach each other again: approximately 45–50 min.
Beyond Trionite, the route gradually reaches Ushite Peak.
Kozya Stena Hut → Ushite Peak: approximately 1:30–1:40 h depending on pace and the chosen summer variant.
Ushite Peak (Kapudzhika) – 1637 m and an important trail junction.
At Ushite, do not turn north toward Haydushka Pesen Hut or Vasilyov Hut.
Continue along the red markings toward Echo Hut.
Ushite → Karchov Preslap – the summer trail bypasses the intermediate rise rather than crossing directly over it.
Karchov Preslap – long grassy saddle between the Troyan and Teteven sections of the mountains.
Beyond Karchov Preslap, a route from Ribaritsa joins the trail. Remain on the red markings toward Echo Hut.
A short section through beech forest follows.
Kavladan Peak – the summer route traverses below the peak instead of climbing directly to the summit.
Do not follow the winter route over Kavladan and its steel-railing section during normal summer navigation.
Zhelezni Vrata – characteristic narrow gap immediately before Echo Hut.
Ushite Peak → Echo Hut: approximately 50–60 min.
Echo Hut – 1646 m, final destination.
Water: do not rely on a reliable water source between the two huts.
💧 Water: drinking water is available only at Kozya Stena Hut and Echo Hut. There is no dependable source between the two huts.
