Route
Yumruka Peak (1,819 m) rises directly above Echo Hut and is one of the most distinctive summits in this part of the Central Balkan. Its shape is easy to recognise from the surrounding ridges.
The northern slope is steep and rocky, while the upper section opens a broad view across the main Balkan ridge.
In clear weather, the summit looks down toward Echo Hut and across to Kozya Stena, Vezhen and the long ridges of the Central Balkan.
The ascent from the hut takes around 30 minutes and is one of the few routes in the app that is genuinely short in time, although the steep terrain still requires care.
Access
From Echo Hut, climb toward the Holy Trinity chapel immediately above the hut. Beyond it, continue on the clearly visible path toward the northern slope of Yumruka Peak.
The gradient is moderate at first but soon becomes steeper and rockier. Follow the established line uphill rather than turning onto the red summer trail that traverses below Yumruka to the west.
The steepest section is equipped with a steel cable. Use it as additional support and move calmly, especially when other hikers are on the same section. In dry summer conditions, specialised via ferrata equipment is not normally required.
Beyond the cable, the gradient gradually eases and the route reaches the broad summit area. Continue to Yumruka Peak.
Return by the same route toward Echo Hut. Take extra care on the steep northern slope and cable section during the descent, when slipping is easier.
⚠️ The direct ascent is not suitable on wet or icy rock, in strong wind or during thunderstorms.
BGMountainGuide
The name Yumruka (“the Fist”) comes from the characteristic silhouette of the peak. Seen from a distance, its strongly broken profile resembles a clenched human fist.
Navigation
Echo Hut – 1646 m, starting point.
Holy Trinity Chapel – located immediately above the hut and the first major landmark.
Echo Hut → Holy Trinity Chapel: about 10 min.
Beyond the chapel, follow the clearly visible trail climbing the northern slope of Yumruka.
The gradient progressively increases and the terrain becomes rockier.
Steel cable – installed along the steepest section and useful as additional support.
No via ferrata equipment is normally required in dry summer conditions.
The cable section is generally easier to climb than to descend.
Take additional care on wet rock, where the steep gradient significantly increases the risk of slipping.
Hikers with a strong fear of heights may find the direct route from the hut uncomfortable.
ALTERNATIVE: the red summer E3 trail bypasses Yumruka from the west and avoids the steep northern slope, but it does not reach the summit.
Beyond the cable section, the gradient becomes gentler and the trail reaches the broad summit area.
Yumruka Peak – 1819 m.
Echo Hut → summit: approximately 30 min.
Allow approximately 1:00–1:15 h for the round trip including normal short stops.
💧 Water: fill up at Echo Hut. There is no water source on the climb to Yumruka Peak.
