Route
Vezhen Peak (2,198 m) is one of the massive high summits of the Central Balkan. The route from Echo Hut crosses Yumruka Peak (1,819 m) before continuing for a long distance along the open main ridge.
Beyond the steep Yumruka, the landscape gradually settles into broad grassy ridges, saddles and occasional rockier sections. Vezhen itself is distinguished by its spacious, gently rounded summit plateau.
In clear weather, the ridge offers views toward Kozya Stena, Yumruka, Ribaritsa, the Central Balkan and distant parts of northern and southern Bulgaria.
This is a long hike where the main challenges are prolonged exposure and accumulated fatigue rather than technical climbing on the standard summer line.
Access
From Echo Hut, head toward the Holy Trinity Chapel. Beyond the chapel, continue directly uphill across the northern slope of Yumruka Peak. The gradient quickly increases and the steel-cable section is reached. Use the cable as additional support. Beyond the steepest terrain, reach the broad summit of Yumruka Peak at 1819 m, approximately 30 minutes from the hut. Continue down the southern slope toward Vetrovitiya Preslap. At the saddle, join the red-marked main ridge route and continue west toward Vezhen. A long open section gradually climbs toward the Kamenitsa Peak area. Pass the Kamenitsa high point and continue toward Kamenna Porta. At the saddle, do not descend along the trail toward Vezhen Hut; remain on the main ridge. Continue west along the red markings and reach the broad summit of Vezhen Peak at 2198 m after approximately another 30–40 minutes. Hikers who do not wish to cross Yumruka can instead follow the standard red summer trail that bypasses the peak from the west and rejoins this route at Vetrovitiya Preslap.
Navigation
Echo Hut – 1646 m, starting point.
Echo Hut → Holy Trinity Chapel: about 10 min.
Beyond the chapel, continue directly uphill toward the northern slope of Yumruka.
Northern slope of Yumruka – steep terrain with a steel cable providing additional support.
In dry summer conditions this is not a via ferrata and specialised climbing equipment is not normally required.
Wet rock, strong winds or icy conditions considerably increase the difficulty of the direct ascent.
Echo Hut → Yumruka Peak: about 30 min.
Yumruka Peak – 1819 m.
From the summit, continue south and southwest toward Vetrovitiya Preslap.
The initial descent from Yumruka is steep and requires more attention than the ascent.
Vetrovitiya Preslap – join the main red-marked route toward Vezhen here.
Do not take the route descending toward Klisura.
Continue west along the red ridge markings and marker poles.
Vetrovitiya Preslap → Kamenitsa area – the longest section of the route, involving a sustained gradual ascent.
The terrain is mainly open grass and rock without technical climbing passages.
Kamenitsa Peak – the main trail passes close to the summit while the actual high point lies slightly away from the route.
Kamenitsa → Kamenna Porta: approximately 10–20 min.
Kamenna Porta – important saddle between Kamenitsa and Vezhen.
IMPORTANT: do not follow the trail descending toward Vezhen Hut if your destination is Vezhen Peak.
Remain on the main ridge and continue west.
Kamenna Porta → Vezhen Peak: approximately 30–40 min.
The final ascent is non-technical but may feel harder because of accumulated fatigue.
Vezhen Peak – 2198 m.
In dense fog, follow the markings and GPX track carefully because the broad summit plateau provides few obvious visual landmarks.
Water: do not rely on a reliable source directly along the main route.
Total time via Yumruka Peak: approximately 4:00–4:30 h depending on pace and breaks.
ALTERNATIVE SUMMER VARIANT: if you do not want to climb Yumruka or are afraid of heights, use the standard red E3 trail, which traverses below the peak from the west.
For the bypass, shortly after leaving Echo Hut do not continue toward the chapel and summit. Turn right and slightly downhill along the red markings.
The summer trail traverses the western slopes of Yumruka and reaches Vetrovitiya Preslap without climbing the summit.
This alternative avoids the direct steep ascent, the steel-cable section and the descent from Yumruka Peak.
At Vetrovitiya Preslap, both variants join and follow the same route toward Vezhen Peak.
💧 Water: fill up at Echo Hut—there is no drinking water on the main route to Vezhen. Fountains exist on both sides of Kamennata Porta, but each requires roughly a 30-minute detour.
