Description

Levski Peak, better known by its traditional name Ambaritsa, rises to 2,166 m and is one of the characteristic summits on the main ridge of the Central Balkan.

The climb from Dobrila Hut gradually reaches the open grassy slopes of the Balkan Mountains. With height, the sense of space grows and the eye follows the long line of the main ridge.

In clear weather, the summit offers panoramas toward Dobrila, the Kupen peaks, Botev Peak, the northern valleys and distant mountains to the south.

The route is not technical in normal summer conditions, but it gains substantial elevation and almost the entire upper section is exposed to wind.

Access

How to get there

From Dobrila Hut, leave from the eastern side of the hut and follow the clearly visible trail uphill toward the main ridge. The ascent is steep from the beginning. After the first rise, the gradient becomes slightly gentler, but the route continues steadily upward across the exposed slope. Follow the red trail markings and the regularly placed marker poles. The trail leads almost directly to Levski Peak (Ambaritsa). Under normal summer conditions, the ascent from Dobrila Hut takes about 1:30 h. The small metal Ambaritsa Shelter is located at the summit. From here, the red ridge route continues toward Malka Ambaritsa, the Kupen peaks and farther toward Botev Peak.

Peak Legend

The old and still popular name of Levski Peak is Ambaritsa. According to a folk legend from the Troyan region, Krali Marko’s barns — his granaries — stood here, while the neighboring Kupen peaks were his enormous stacks of grain.
