Route
The route from Beklemeto to Kozya Stena Hut is one of the most panoramic ridge hikes in the western part of the Central Balkan.
Almost the entire day is spent on the open main ridge, with wide views across both the northern and southern slopes of the Balkan Mountains. The terrain alternates between grassy ridges and rockier sections.
The Kozya Stena area is the most distinctive part of the route — the ridge narrows and becomes more dramatic, while the standard summer line also allows a calmer traverse below the most exposed section.
Kozya Stena Hut sits in a scenic position on the ridge and makes a natural destination or staging point along the E3 Kom–Emine trail.
Access
From Beklemeto, head west following the red E3 Kom–Emine markings. At first, the route follows a broad dirt road that gradually becomes a mountain trail. Follow the summer traversing variants toward Kozya Stena Hut. In the area of Kozya Stena Peak there is a choice. The main GPX route continues along the summer trail that traverses below the peak and avoids the exposed rocky ridge. This is the recommended option for people who are afraid of heights. Hikers with sufficient experience and confidence may, in dry and calm weather, choose the ridge variant over Kozya Stena Peak. It includes a rocky ridge and a section with a steel cable and adds approximately half an hour to the hike. After crossing or bypassing Kozya Stena, the variants rejoin. Continue west along the red markings toward Kozya Stena Hut. The total time on the standard summer variant is approximately 2:30 h.
Navigation
Beklemeto / Troyan Pass – starting point.
Initially follow the broad dirt track heading west.
Follow the red E3 Kom–Emine trail markings.
Beklemeto → Aviators' Memorial area: approximately 50 min.
Summer bypasses and ridge variants are encountered along the route. When uncertain, use the summer trail.
Kozya Stena area – choice between the bypass and the exposed ridge route.
FOR HIKERS WITH A FEAR OF HEIGHTS: remain on the summer trail and bypass Kozya Stena.
The summer bypass is less exposed but remains rocky and narrow in places.
RIDGE OPTION: climb toward Kozya Stena Peak and continue across the rocky ridge.
The ridge option contains approximately 400 m of terrain assisted by a steel cable.
The cable provides additional support across exposed rocky terrain.
In normal dry summer conditions, no specialised climbing equipment is normally required, but sure footing and confidence with exposure are important.
Do not use the exposed ridge option on wet rock, in strong winds, dense fog, thunderstorms or icy conditions.
Crossing the summit and ridge adds at least approximately 30 min compared with the bypass.
After the two variants rejoin, continue along the red-marked trail toward Kozya Stena Hut.
Reliable water is limited along the open route, so carry enough water from the start.
Kozya Stena Hut – 1536 m, final destination.
💧 Water: there is no water source between Beklemeto and Kozya Stena Hut. Carry enough; during hot, dry summers the hut's own water supply can also become limited.
