Route
Golyam Kupen Peak (2,169 m) is one of the most impressive rocky summits in the Central Balkan. The route begins from Levski Peak (Ambaritsa, 2,166 m) and continues along the main ridge into increasingly alpine terrain.
The grassy slopes gradually give way to rock and narrower ridges. The small high-mountain lake Lokvata below the Kupen peaks adds a distinctive detail to the rugged landscape.
In clear weather, Golyam Kupen offers wide views back toward Ambaritsa and ahead toward Krasttsite, Zhaltets and Botev Peak, as well as into the deep valleys on both sides of the ridge.
The final ascent is steep and exposed and is the most serious part of the route. It requires calm movement, secure footing and stable weather.
Access
From Levski Peak (Ambaritsa), continue east along the main ridge on the red E3 Kom–Emine marking. The trail passes through the Malka Ambaritsa area and continues toward the Kupen peaks.
At junctions toward Ambaritsa Hut, stay on the main red marking. As you approach Malak Kupen, the terrain gradually becomes rockier.
The summer route traverses below Malak Kupen on its northern side. After the traverse, reach the small saddle between Malak and Golyam Kupen near the high-mountain lake Lokvata.
The main ascent of Golyam Kupen begins from the saddle. The slope is steep and rocky, and the final section includes places assisted by a steel cable. Use the cable as additional support and keep distance from other hikers.
Beyond the steepest section, the trail reaches Golyam Kupen Peak. For the return, follow the same line back toward the saddle and Ambaritsa, or continue along the E3 only if your planned route goes onward toward Krasttsite and Botev.
⚠️ Wet rock, strong wind, fog or thunderstorms make the final ascent considerably more demanding.

Golyam Kupen and Malak Kupen are part of the old Troyan cycle of legends about Krali Marko. According to the legend, Marko harvested his fields along the high ridge, dried the sheaves near Krasttsite and piled the harvested grain into enormous stacks — today’s Kupen peaks. Folk imagination says that the stacks turned to stone and remained as peaks in the Balkan Mountains.
