Description

The route from Zeleni Preslap to Skakavitsa Waterfall is an enjoyable and relatively easy hike in northwestern Rila, well suited to a day when you are not aiming for a high summit.

The trail passes through cool forest and gradually enters the Skakavitsa Valley. The sound of the river, small bridges and shaded sections make the first part especially pleasant in warm weather.

Skakavitsa Hut is a natural place to rest, and beyond it the valley gradually opens toward the rocky amphitheatre and the waterfall.

Skakavitsa Waterfall is a beautiful finish to the route and, when water levels are high, one of the most impressive sights in the area.

Access

How to get there

From Zeleni Preslap, follow the wide dirt road. The beginning is easy and comfortable. After about 10–15 minutes you reach a junction with signs – this is the most important point in the first section.

Up to the junction, the route follows red-yellow marking. After it, the yellow marking continues toward Pionerska Hut, while the route to Skakavitsa Hut and the waterfall follows green-blue-red marking.

The trail continues through the forest with a gentle and steady ascent. There are small bridges and the sound of the river nearby. Skakavitsa Hut is reached in about 1:00–1:15 hours.

From the hut, continue uphill along the path. There is no classic painted marking here, but there are directional signs. After another 30–40 minutes you reach Skakavishki Waterfall – the highest waterfall in Rila.

ℹ️ If you plan to stay overnight, contact the hut in advance.
