Route

Description

The Seven Rila Lakes are among the most recognisable places in Bulgaria. The loop is best enjoyed without rushing, with time to stop beside the different lakes along the way.

The lakes are arranged in steps within a broad glacial cirque, each with its own shape and character. As you climb, the view gradually widens and more of the lake group appears below.

From the highest part of the route, clear weather reveals the classic panorama across the entire cirque. The area is very popular, but early in the morning or outside the busiest hours it feels noticeably calmer.

Access

How to get there

From Rilski Ezera Hut, take the marked summer route toward the lake group. Follow the signs and official trails uphill through the cirque.

Continue gradually past the main lakes toward Okoto and Salzata. Higher up, the gradient increases and the terrain becomes rockier.

At Salzata, you have reached the highest part of the classic loop. If you visit a panoramic viewpoint above the lakes, return afterward to the marked route.

Begin descending through the lake group toward Ribnoto Lake and Seven Rila Lakes Hut. From there, continue along the trail back toward Rilski Ezera Hut.

From Rilski Ezera Hut, return to the upper lift station. Check the last lift time before starting the loop and stay on the official trails rather than using informal shortcuts between the lakes.

Navigation

Key points

1

Chairlift (Panichishte → upper station) – check operating hours; it can feel colder on the lift.

2

Rilski Ezera Hut (start) – water, battery, offline map check.

3

Lakes area – follow the main trail and signs; avoid taking a different variant by mistake.

4

Salzata Lake – highest point of the loop; often windy, take a short break.

5

Panoramic viewpoint (optional) – short detour, then return to the main trail.

6

Descent via Ribnoto Lake – slower on the knees; keep a steady pace.

7

Seven Rila Lakes Hut – a good place for a break before the final return.

8

Return to Rilski Ezera Hut – close the loop and head back to the lift.

9

💧 Water: water is available at the huts and at the spout on the trail toward Okoto/Ezeren Peak. Do not drink directly from the lakes.
