Route
Irechek Peak (2,852 m) is one of the highest summits in Rila and lies close to Musala and Malka Musala. Its rocky profile rises above the Musala Lakes and gives the eastern side of the cirque a rugged high-mountain character.
The route passes through the familiar Musala cirque but gradually leaves the busiest line toward Musala and enters a quieter part of the massif.
In clear weather, the upper mountain offers beautiful views toward Musala, Malka Musala, Deno, the Musala Lakes and much of eastern Rila.
The upper section is rocky and exposed to wind, so it calls for more careful movement than the standard tourist route to Musala.
Access
Drive to Borovets resort. The most convenient place to leave the car is around the lower station of the Yastrebets gondola. Parking immediately around the lift is limited and the small paid parking area can fill early on busy summer days, so arriving early is recommended.
Take the Yastrebets gondola from Borovets. The ride to the upper station takes approximately 25 minutes. ⚠️ Before starting, always check the current operating schedule, whether the gondola is running that day and the time of the final descent from Yastrebets. Operating hours are seasonal and may change depending on conditions.
The hiking section begins at the upper Yastrebets station. Follow the wide red-marked trail toward Musala Hut. This section is approximately 3.5 km, relatively easy and normally takes about 1 hour.
From Musala Hut, the route toward Irechek leaves the standard red hiking trail and continues along an unmarked path toward the Sphinx. Walk beside the Musala Lakes, keeping them on your right. The initially gentle terrain gradually becomes steeper.
The Sphinx is the main landmark in the upper section. Beyond it, reach the saddle in the area between Studeni Chal and Irechek and continue toward the summit. Shortly before the final climb there is a short narrower rocky section where extra care is required, particularly on wet terrain or in strong winds.
Irechek Peak stands at 2,852 m. Return along the same route via the Sphinx and Musala Hut to the upper Yastrebets station. Allow sufficient time for breaks and keep a comfortable safety margin before the final gondola descent.
