Route
The route from Semkovo to Ribni Ezera Hut via the Vapski Lakes passes through one of the quieter parts of central Rila.
The first section runs through forest and along broad mountain tracks, while higher up the scenery gradually opens toward lake cirques and spacious high-mountain slopes.
The Vapski Lakes are the natural highlight around the middle of the hike, and toward the end the beautiful Ribni Ezera cirque gradually comes into view.
The hike is long but varied and involves no technical climbing in normal summer conditions.
Access
Semkovo resort is reached by road from Belitsa. The most practical option is to leave the car in the resort area and continue on foot to Semkovo Hut. A mountain road also reaches the hut, but its condition may change and it should not be assumed suitable for every vehicle.
From Semkovo Hut, head toward Vapa and the Vapski Lakes. The first part follows forest and mountain roads. Beyond Vapa, continue uphill toward the two Vapski Lakes. The lower section has yellow markings and some older direction signs, but do not rely on painted markings alone.
After reaching the Upper Vapsko Lake, keep to the right side of the lake and continue uphill toward the main ridge. This section is less clearly marked, with the worn path and stone cairns serving as the main navigation aids. The gradient becomes steeper higher up.
On reaching the ridge, join the main high-mountain trail between Granchar Hut and Ribni Ezera Hut. From here, follow the red markings toward Ribni Ezera. The terrain is open and panoramic, but navigation can become much more difficult in fog.
Continue along the ridge trail toward the Kanarata area and Kanarski Preslap. From the pass, descend toward the Ribni Lakes on a rocky switchback trail. The route ends at Ribni Ezera Hut between the Upper and Lower Ribni Lakes. Check current hut conditions in advance if planning to stay overnight.
Navigation
Semkovo Hut – start of the route.
Head toward Vapa and the Vapski Lakes; the lower section has yellow markings, although they may be old or sparse in places.
Vapa area – an important landmark before the climb toward the lakes.
Lower and Upper Vapsko Lakes – the most scenic section of the route.
Beyond the Upper Vapsko Lake, keep to the right of the lake and climb toward the ridge. This section is mainly marked by stone cairns.
The upper climb becomes steeper – in fog, follow the GPX track carefully.
On reaching the main ridge, join the red-marked trail toward Ribni Ezera Hut.
Kanarski Preslap – the descent toward the Ribni Ezera cirque begins from this area.
Ribni Ezera Hut – end of the route and an option for an overnight stay.
💧 Water: Semkovo Hut and Ribni Ezera Hut are supplied with water. The Vapski Lakes and streams are natural sources and should not be treated as drinking water without purification.
