Route

Description

A scenic hut-to-hut traverse in central Rila, connecting the Semkovo area with the Ribni Ezera glacial cirque.

After a sustained forest ascent, the route reaches the high ridge at Gorni Kuki, where wide views toward Rila and Pirin begin to open.

The high section passes through the Vapa area and below Kanarata before descending to Ribni Ezera Hut, located between the two main Ribni Lakes.

There is no technical climbing in dry summer conditions, but the route is long, exposed and requires good physical fitness.

Access

How to get there

Semkovo resort is reached by road from Belitsa. The most practical option is to leave the car in the resort area and walk approximately 25–30 minutes to Semkovo Hut. A mountain road also continues toward the hut, but its condition may change, so do not assume it is suitable for every vehicle.

From Semkovo Hut, head north on the green-marked trail toward Gorni Kuki. Pay attention to the signs near the hut because several hiking trails leave the area. The correct route gradually follows the Stankova River valley and begins a sustained climb through the forest.

After approximately 2 hours, reach Gorni Kuki Saddle and the open main ridge. Here the green trail meets the red high-mountain route. Turn left, west, and continue along the red markings toward Vapa and Ribni Ezera.

Beyond Gorni Kuki the terrain becomes open and panoramic. The trail passes through the Vapa area and continues toward Redzhepitsa and Kanarata. Stay on the red markings and do not follow side trails descending toward the Vapski or Karaalanishki Lakes.

Before Kanarata, the route gradually turns toward Kanarski Preslap. From the pass, a steeper descent leads into the Ribni Ezera cirque. The trail is rocky and follows numerous switchbacks, so descend carefully on wet rocks and when tired.

The route ends at Ribni Ezera Hut between the Upper and Lower Ribni Lakes. If this is part of a multi-day trek, check current hut conditions and overnight availability before setting out.

Navigation

Key points

1

Semkovo Hut – start of the hiking route.

2

Follow the green markings north toward Stankova River and Gorni Kuki. Several marked trails leave the hut area, so confirm the correct direction at the start.

3

Stankova River – sustained forest ascent toward the high ridge.

4

Gorni Kuki Saddle – approximately 2,435 m. The green trail reaches the main ridge and joins the red-marked route toward Ribni Ezera.

5

Vapa area – exposed high-mountain terrain with extensive panoramic views.

6

Continue along the red-blue markings toward the area below Redzhepitsa and Kanarata.

7

Kanarski Preslap – an important landmark before the descent into the Ribni Ezera cirque.

8

A steep rocky descent with switchbacks follows below Kanarski Preslap – take extra care on wet terrain.

9

Ribni Ezera Hut – end of the route and an option for an overnight stay.

10

💧 Water: Semkovo Hut and Ribni Ezera Hut are supplied with water. Do not rely on a confirmed fountain on the high section through Gorni Kuki; treat any water taken from streams or lakes.
