Description

The route from Kartala to Macedonia Hut is an enjoyable hike in southwestern Rila, gradually leaving the forested valley for open high-mountain slopes.

The first part is green and calm, with a long stretch through the Bistritsa Valley. As elevation increases, the forest begins to thin and views back toward the Blagoevgrad basin gradually open up.

Macedonia Hut stands high and exposed below the Rila ridge and makes a natural starting point for longer hikes toward the Ribni Lakes, Semkovo and the interior of Rila.

Access

How to get there

Drive to the Kartala ski area and continue to the parking area shortly beyond it. The walking route to Macedonia Hut begins here.

Take the broad mountain road, which gradually climbs through the Bistritsa River valley. The gradient is steady through the first part and the route remains in forest for a long time.

At several points, the hiking trail leaves the road and follows shorter forest sections that cut across the broad bends. Follow the marking on the ground and the GPX track whenever you leave the main road.

Higher up, the forest begins to thin and the route becomes more open. Continue toward Mechi Pass and the hut.

In the final part, the road makes a broad bend while the walking line heads more directly uphill. After the last climb, you reach Macedonia Hut.
