Route
Mechit Peak (2,568 m), also known as Golyam Mechit, is a rounded high summit in northwestern Rila. It is a quieter objective than Malyovitsa or the Seven Rila Lakes and offers a strong sense of space and solitude.
The route from Govedartsi moves from conifer forest and the area around Mechit Hut toward increasingly open grassy slopes and the high ridge.
In clear weather, the summit offers views toward the Malyovitsa section, the ridges of Rila, Vitosha and the surrounding valleys.
The main challenge is the substantial elevation gain and sustained climb rather than technical difficulty in normal summer conditions.
Access
From the upper part of Govedartsi, follow the dirt road upward. At the beginning the marking is sparse, so pay close attention. At the first junction, take the left branch and continue uphill through the forest.
After crossing the ski slope, you reach a wide dirt road. Later you come to an important junction where you turn right for Mechit Hut. From there the hut is about 15–20 minutes away.
From Mechit Hut, continue along the dirt road above the hut. After the meadow there is another important junction – keep right for Mechit. From here the green-yellow marking begins along Kaiser’s road.
The ascent is constant but straightforward, gradually leading to Small Mechit. After that, continue along the ridge toward Mechit Peak.
In the final section the summit is clearly visible, but for the last climb you need to catch the short steep path leading to the ridge.
⚠️ In fog and poor visibility, navigation at the beginning and along the upper part becomes much more difficult.
BGMountainGuide
A local legend from Govedartsi tells of two boyar brothers who lived in the Gradishteto fortress. The elder was named Mecho — a huge man who wore clothes and a kalpak made of bearskin. During the Ottoman invasion, the brothers led a fighting band and died in battle; according to the legend, the people named Golyam Mechit and Malak Mechit in their memory.
Navigation

Mechit Hut – last convenient place for a short break.
Junction after the meadow above the hut – keep right for Mechit.
Green-yellow marking / Kaiser’s road – the main line toward Small Mechit and Mechit Peak.
Small Mechit – intermediate point on the ridge.
