Description

Spano Pole Shelter lies at approximately 2,050 m above sea level in the broad high-mountain landscape of Spano Pole in the Pirin Mountains. Its characteristic small cabins, often known among hikers as the “mushrooms”, are one of the most recognisable sights in this part of the mountain.

The route from Vihren Hut is a beautiful and varied traverse linking the Banderitsa Valley with the Spano Pole cirque. The landscape changes gradually along the way — from dwarf pine and the surroundings of Muratovo Lake to open, rocky high-mountain terrain around Banderishka Porta.

Banderishka Porta is the highest point of the route at approximately 2,501 m. Wide views open from the pass toward the higher parts of Pirin, while on the opposite side lies the broad Spano Pole cirque with its lakes, grassy slopes and mountain streams.

Beyond the pass, the rugged alpine landscape gradually gives way to greener and gentler slopes. In clear weather, the route offers wide views toward the surrounding peaks and cirques, while near the end the characteristic roofs of Spano Pole Shelter gradually appear across the open mountain terrain.

In normal summer conditions, the route contains no mandatory technical sections, but it remains exposed high-mountain terrain where weather conditions can change quickly.

Access

How to get there

From Vihren Hut, follow the trail marked in blue and yellow toward Muratovo Lake and Banderishka Porta. The path begins gaining elevation gradually as it enters the Banderitsa Valley.

After approximately half a kilometre, reach a wooden bridge over the river. Do not cross the bridge onto the red- and green-marked trails. For Muratovo Lake, remain on the blue-and-yellow-marked trail and continue alongside the river.

Follow the main path uphill through dwarf pine to Muratovo Lake. From the lake, continue on the blue and yellow markings toward Banderishka Porta. The gradient gradually increases and the terrain becomes rockier. The final approach to the pass is the steepest ascent of the route.

At Banderishka Porta, approximately 2501 m, the routes separate. The blue marking continues to the right toward Sinanishka Porta and Sinanitsa Hut. For Spano Pole Shelter, turn left and follow the yellow markings toward Spano Pole and Yane Sandanski Hut. Marker poles are also present along this section.

A long descent begins from the pass through the open Spano Pole cirque. Continue following the yellow marking. The trail crosses several mountain streams and passes the Spano Pole lakes, including close to Dalgo Lake.

Farther down, reach an important marked junction where the yellow route between Vihren Hut and Yane Sandanski Hut crosses the brown-marked route between Sinanitsa Hut and Spano Pole Shelter.

Leave the yellow marking here and take the brown trail toward Spano Pole Shelter. A short and gentle climb follows over a low ridge. Once across it, the characteristic shelter cabins gradually become visible in clear weather.

Continue on the brown markings. The final section is mostly a gentle descent through open mountain terrain to Spano Pole Shelter. In fog, follow the markings and GPX track carefully, particularly around the junctions in the Spano Pole cirque.
