Route
This hike shows one of Pirin's most beautiful gradual changes — from the shaded forests around Popina Laka to the rugged high-mountain cirque of Tevno Ezero.
Around Begovitsa Hut the landscape is green and relatively calm. As the route climbs toward Begovishki Pass, the forest falls away and open slopes, rock and distant views into the interior of the mountain take over.
The finish at Tevno Ezero is a striking contrast — the shelter and dark water lie in the rocky Belemeto cirque, enclosed by high ridges.
The route is long and gains elevation steadily, but the variety of terrain makes it especially rewarding for hikers looking for a full day in the mountains.
Access
From Yane Sandanski Hut, take the route toward Begovitsa Hut. The opening section is mostly forested and gains elevation gradually.
At Begovitsa Hut, continue uphill on the blue marking through the Begovitsa Valley. Soon after the hut, a route branches toward Spano Pole Shelter; for Tevno Ezero, stay on the main line through the valley.
Follow the blue marking toward Begovishki Pass. Along the way, another route branches toward Pirin Hut; continue toward the pass without taking that turn.
After climbing to Begovishki Pass, continue to the junction for Tevno Ezero and take the green marking. The trail skirts Kamenishka Kukla across rocky terrain, where progress can be slower.
Several small lakes follow, then a final climb leads into the Belemeto cirque. Continue on the green marking to Tevno Ezero Shelter. In low cloud, check the GPX track because the open terrain around the pass and Belemeto has few close landmarks.
Navigation
Access / parking — with a regular car: leave the car in the area of Yane Sandanski Hut and continue on foot; with a high-clearance vehicle: it may be possible to drive farther up toward Begovitsa Hut (check the road conditions on site).
Yane Sandanski Hut (start) – follow the blue marking through forest.
Begovitsa Hut – from here the route includes a blue-yellow shared marked section.
Junction after Begovitsa (key point) – stay on the blue marking toward Begovishki Pass.
Begovishki Pass – key point; after the pass, follow the green marking toward Tevno Lake Shelter.
Tevno Lake Shelter (finish) – arrival at the lake cirque.
💧 Water: reliable refill points are in the Popina Laka/Yane Sandanski Hut area, at Begovitsa Hut and at Tevno Ezero Shelter. Treat water from intermediate streams.
