Route
Vihren Peak (2,914 m) is the highest summit in Pirin, and the line through Kazanite and Koncheto reveals the wildest face of northern Pirin. This is a route among marble walls, deep cirques and an exposed high-mountain ridge.
The Kazanite cirques lie between Vihren and Kutelo and create one of the most dramatic mountain landscapes in Pirin. Higher up, the route reaches Premkata and the famous narrow Koncheto ridge, where the sense of height and space is especially strong.
In clear weather there are wide views toward Kutelo, Banski Suhodol, Todorka, the Banderitsa Valley and much of northern Pirin. After returning from Koncheto, the ascent of Vihren adds another sweeping panorama over the whole area.
This is a long and serious high-mountain hike with exposed sections. It is suitable for experienced hikers who are confident on rocky terrain and comfortable with significant exposure.
Access
From Vihren Hut, follow the red marking toward Vihren. Reach the Eltepska Voda stream, where the routes via Kabata and Kazanite separate. For this hike, continue toward Kazanite.
The path gradually traverses the northeastern slopes of Vihren and enters the Malak and Golyam Kazan cirques. Follow the red marking toward Kazana Shelter and Premkata.
Above the shelter, the terrain becomes steeper and more scree-covered. Climb toward Premkata while keeping distance from hikers above and below you and staying on the established trail.
At Premkata, turn toward Kutelo and Koncheto. The standard hiking line follows the marking and traverses below Kutelo. Do not take the unmarked ridge over Kutelo if you are following the standard version of this route.
Continue toward Koncheto. Move calmly through the narrow and exposed sections and use the fixed protection where provided. After Koncheto, return along the same line to Premkata.
From Premkata, head toward Vihren Peak. The northern ascent is steep and rocky, so follow the marking carefully. After reaching the summit, descend south toward Kabata saddle and continue on the red marking through the Kabata area back to Vihren Hut.

The name “Koncheto” (“the little horse”) comes from the way less experienced hikers once crossed the narrowest part of the marble ridge — by straddling it as if riding a horse. This unusual way of crossing is preserved in the name of one of Pirin’s most recognizable ridges.
Navigation
Vihren Hut – start on the red trail marking.
Eltepska Voda – key junction; for this route continue toward Kazanite.
Malak and Golyam Kazan – the route enters beneath the marble walls of Vihren and Kutelo.
Kazana Shelter – a convenient place to rest before the steep climb.
Premkata – the important junction between Vihren, Kutelo and Koncheto.
Traverse below Kutelo – follow the marked hiking route rather than the unmarked ridge option.
Koncheto – a narrow and strongly exposed ridge section with fixed protection.
Return to Premkata – the ascent toward Vihren begins from here.
Vihren Peak – after the summit, descend on the red marking through Kabata toward the hut.
💧 Water: carry enough from Vihren Hut. There is no dependable water source on the high section through Kazanite, Premkata and Koncheto; the seasonal spring below Vihren cannot be relied upon.
