Route
Muratov Peak (2,669 m) rises above Muratovo Lake and Banderishka Porta in northern Pirin. The summit is granite, with steep slopes and a distinctive pyramidal profile.
The classic summer approach starts at Vihren Hut, follows the Banderitsa River past Muratovo Lake, and then climbs toward Banderishka Porta.
From the pass to the summit, the route becomes much more technical. The marked trail is left behind and the final section crosses rocky, unmarked terrain where the hands may be needed for balance and movement.
In clear weather, the summit offers wide views toward Vihren, Kutelo, Todorka, Donchovi Karauli, the Banderishki cirque and the western parts of Pirin.
Access
From Vihren Hut, follow the blue-yellow trail markings toward Sinanitsa Hut and Banderishka Porta. After roughly ten minutes, reach a wooden bridge over the Banderitsa River. Do not cross the bridge; continue on the right-hand side of the river along the marked trail.
The path gradually gains elevation through dwarf pine and open rocky terrain and reaches Muratovo Lake after about 1.8 km. From the lake, continue uphill on the blue-yellow markings toward Banderishka Porta. The route passes small lakes from the Ovinati group before the slope becomes steeper and the terrain turns rockier and more scree-covered.
At Banderishka Porta, the marked trail continues toward Sinanitsa and Spano Pole. For Muratov Peak, leave the marked route and climb toward the summit over the obvious rocky slope. From the pass to the summit there are about 0.4 km and roughly 176 m of elevation gain.
The final section is the hardest part of the hike. Movement is over large rocks and broken terrain, and the hands may be useful in places. Move slowly and choose secure footholds, especially on the descent.
Return to Vihren Hut by the same route via Banderishka Porta and Muratovo Lake.
