Route
Golyam Tipits Peak (2,645 m) is the highest summit in the Tipits group and rises above the high-mountain cirque of the same name. The area is quieter than the routes around Vihren and gives a strong sense of heading deep into the interior of Pirin.
The approach from Vihren Hut passes through the Banderitsa cirque and by high mountain lakes before gradually reaching the main Pirin ridge. Once high on the ridge, the scenery changes completely — forest and dwarf pine lie far below, while granite slopes and open ridges dominate the view.
In clear weather, the Tipits ridge offers views toward the Banderitsa Lakes, Todorka, Vihren, Kamenitsa and many of the central Pirin peaks.
The hike is long, with substantial elevation gain and extended time on exposed terrain, so good fitness and stable weather are important.
Access
From Vihren Hut, walk behind the hut and cross the small bridge over the Banderitsa River. Follow the combined red and green trail markings southwards.
The path gradually climbs through dwarf pine and small open meadows. After roughly 15 minutes it reaches the Ravnako area. A short detour on the left leads towards Okoto Lake, while the main route continues uphill through the Banderishki cirque.
Continue along the combined red and green markings. Higher up, pass the junction for Ribno Banderishko Lake and continue towards Zhabeshko Lake.
At Zhabeshko Lake the markings separate. The green trail continues towards Todorina Porta, the Vasilashki Lakes and Demyanitsa Hut. For Golyam Tipits remain on the red-marked trail towards Tevno Ezero Shelter.
Beyond Zhabeshko Lake, continue towards Dalgo Banderishko Lake. The trail passes alongside the lake and gradually enters the rockier upper part of the Banderishki cirque.
Continue on the red markings towards the upper Banderishki Lakes. The terrain becomes increasingly open, rocky and distinctly alpine. There is little protection from sun or strong wind in this upper section.
Above the lakes begins the main ascent towards the main Pirin ridge. Follow the red markings carefully across rocky terrain towards Bashliyska Porta. Some sections cross large granite blocks and require careful footing.
At Bashliyska Porta you reach the main Pirin ridge. Extensive views open towards the Banderishki, Bashliyski and Vasilashki areas. Continue southeast along the red trail towards the Tipitsite ridge.
The trail follows the ridge through the area of Opreno Peak. The terrain alternates between grassy-rocky slopes and larger granite blocks, but in clear weather the direction is straightforward.
As you approach Golyam Tipits, the marked trail passes very close to the highest point. Leave the marked trail for a short final ascent to the summit. Under dry summer conditions, the final grassy and rocky slope does not require technical climbing.
Golyam Tipits provides extensive views towards the Vasilashki and Tipitski Lakes, the Banderishki cirque, Todorka, Vihren and the high central Pirin peaks. The route ends on the summit. Return to Vihren Hut along the same route.
