Description

The loop across Donchovi Karauli and Banderishki Chukar Peak (2,732 m) is one of the wildest and most panoramic day hikes in the Vihren Hut area. Donchovi Karauli form a jagged rocky ridge with high points above 2,600 m, giving the route a distinctly alpine character.

The route combines Muratovo Lake, the high Banderishka Porta, the rocky crest of the Karauli and the massive granite summit of Banderishki Chukar. The terrain is varied, but the upper section is almost entirely rocky and unmarked.

In clear weather, wide views open toward Vihren, Todorka, Sinanitsa, Spano Pole, the Banderitsa Lakes and much of central Pirin.

This is a serious route for well-prepared hikers. Long stretches on rocky ridges and moraine terrain require strong navigation, secure footing and suitable conditions.

Access

How to get there

IMPORTANT – plan a very early start. This is effectively a full-day high-mountain route and much of the traverse is exposed above the surrounding cirques. During the main summer season, vehicle access to Vihren Hut is restricted during part of the day. For summer 2026, motor vehicle traffic between Shiligarnika and Vihren Hut is prohibited daily from 08:00 to 16:00 between 10 July and 15 September. Always check the current regulations issued by Bansko Municipality before travelling. An early start is also important in order to complete the exposed ridge before the typical summer afternoon thunderstorms develop.

From Vihren Hut follow the marked trail towards Muratovo Lake and Yane Sandanski Hut. The path crosses the Banderishki cirque and gradually gains elevation. Follow the yellow trail markings.

Reach Muratovo Lake below Muratov Peak and Hvoynati Peak. This is a suitable place for a short break and a final weather check. If cloud is developing rapidly, the ridge is already in fog or strong wind is present, do not continue onto the Karauli traverse.

Continue from Muratovo Lake along the yellow markings towards Banderishka Porta. The terrain becomes increasingly rocky and the final section climbs in zigzags towards the saddle between Muratov Peak and the Donchovi Karauli ridge.

Banderishka Porta marks the transition from the standard marked hiking route to the serious ridge traverse. The yellow trail continues towards Spano Pole and Yane Sandanski Hut. Leave it here and head southeast along the rocky Donchovi Karauli ridge.

There is no continuous standard paint marking from this point through the main ridge section. Cairns and traces of previous passage exist in places, but they may be difficult to identify. The GPX track is an important aid but does not replace safe route choice on the actual terrain.

The ridge first crosses Donchovi Karauli 4 and then continues successively across Donchovi Karauli 3, 2 and 1. Between the individual high points there are repeated short climbs and descents, narrow rocky sections and large blocks where the hands may be required for balance.

Do not automatically attempt to stay on the geometrically highest point of every rock formation. In several places the established line passes just below obstacles. Follow cairns, the GPX track and the safest logical line. In fog this section becomes particularly difficult because there is no clearly defined footpath and dangerous gullies descend towards both surrounding cirques.

The traverse also passes the distinctive Karauli Needle. The surrounding slopes are steep and loose rock may occur. Maintain spacing between hikers to avoid dislodging stones onto people below.

Beyond Donchovi Karauli 1 the approach to Banderishki Chukar begins. This is not simple ridge walking: large granite blocks make progress slower and more tiring than the distance alone suggests.

Continue through the rocky terrain towards Banderishki Chukar. The final approach requires concentration and secure footing. Wet granite significantly increases the difficulty and risk.

From Banderishki Chukar extensive views open towards the Banderishki cirque, Spano Pole, the Bashliyski area and central Pirin. Reaching the summit does not mean the difficult terrain is over.

Continue along the high ridge towards the Vâzela area and Bashliyska Porta. The terrain remains mostly unmarked, rocky and exposed. Avoid being tempted by direct gullies descending towards the lakes – they are not part of the normal circular route.

At Bashliyska Porta the traverse finally joins the red-marked trail between Vihren Hut and Tevno Ezero Shelter. Begin the long descent towards the Banderishki cirque.

Follow the red markings towards Vihren Hut. The first part is steep and rocky, crossing large granite blocks and moraine terrain. Fatigue is usually significant by this stage, so take particular care with footing.

The path gradually becomes clearer as it reaches the upper Banderishki Lakes. Continue towards Dalgo Banderishko Lake and then down to Zhabeshko Banderishko Lake.

At Zhabeshko Lake the green trail from Todorina Porta and Demyanitsa Hut joins the red route. From here the red and green markings run together towards Vihren Hut.

Pass the junction for Ribno Banderishko Lake and descend towards the Ravnako area. Continue through dwarf pine and along the Banderitsa River.

After the final descent and bridge crossing, return to Vihren Hut and close the loop. Under dry summer conditions and with good fitness, allow approximately 8:30–9:30 hours. A slower crossing of the rocky ridge can easily push the total beyond 10 hours.

Interesting Fact

“Karauli” is an old folk term for jagged rocky ridges that resemble sentries. The name Donchovi Karauli is also associated with the voivode Doncho Zlatkov, known in the Pirin region, while “chukar” is an old mountain term for a sharp, rocky summit.
