Route
The route from Vihren Hut to Demyanitsa Hut via Todorina Porta links two of Pirin's best-known mountain bases and crosses a remarkably varied landscape.
The hike begins in the Banderitsa cirque, then gradually climbs toward the high Todorina Porta saddle. From there, views open toward Todorka, the Vasilashki Lakes and the deep valleys of Pirin.
Beyond the high point, the character of the hike changes — the rugged rocky terrain is left behind as the trail descends toward lakes, dwarf pine and eventually forest.
It is an enjoyable hut-to-hut route, but it crosses exposed high-mountain terrain and requires good navigation in fog or poor weather.
Access
From Vihren Hut, start behind the hut and cross the bridge over the Banderitsa River. Follow the combined red and green markings uphill through the Banderitsa cirque. Pass the junctions for Okoto Lake and Ribno Banderishko Lake and continue to Zhabeshko Lake. At the lake, the red marking separates towards Bashliyska Porta and Tevno Lake Shelter. For Demyanitsa Hut, continue along the green marking. Climb the steep switchbacks towards Todorina Porta. From the pass, descend along the green-marked trail past the two Todorini Lakes and continue towards the Upper and Lower Vasilashko Lakes. After the lakes, the trail descends through dwarf pine and white-pine forest. In the lower section, the green marking reaches the main trail between Demyanitsa Hut and Tevno Lake Shelter. From here, follow the blue and yellow markings towards Demyanitsa Hut to the end of the route.
BGMountainGuide
One old Pirin legend connects Todorka with the brave Theodora, defender of the Sitan fortress, who chose death over captivity. In other versions, folk tradition also links Todorka with the Todorini Ochi lakes, whose waters are described as the tears of the tragic heroine. This is a folk legend, not a proven historical event.
