Description

This route links the Sinanitsa cirque with Tevno Ezero and passes through several very different Pirin landscapes.

The pale rocks around Sinanitsa dominate the opening section before the route enters the broad Spano Pole area. Farther on it begins gaining elevation again and gradually returns to a more rugged high-mountain setting.

The finish at Tevno Ezero is especially beautiful — the dark water and shelter lie in the rocky Belemeto cirque, surrounded by high Pirin ridges.

It is a long and varied hike, best treated as a full day in the mountains in stable weather.

Access

How to get there

From Sinanitsa Hut, follow the brown trail markings towards Sinanishka Porta and Spano Pole Shelter. The path leaves the hut and Sinanitsa Lake and gradually climbs through the Sinanitsa cirque.

Continue uphill on the brown markings. The terrain gradually becomes rockier and views open back towards Sinanitsa Lake and Sinanitsa Peak. The final approach to Sinanishka Porta is steeper.

At Sinanishka Porta you reach an important trail junction. The blue markings lead towards Vihren Hut, while for Spano Pole you must remain on the brown-marked trail.

Descend from the pass into the broad Spano Pole cirque. The terrain is mostly open and grassy, but navigation can become difficult in fog. Follow the brown paint markings and marker poles carefully.

The trail eventually reaches Spano Pole Shelter, the main intermediate point of the route and a good location for a longer rest before beginning the second and longer stage towards Tevno Ezero.

From the shelter continue south on the brown markings. After roughly twenty minutes you reach the Arnautski Grobishta area. Several trails and junctions occur here, so pay close attention to the markings and GPX track.

Continue on the brown trail through alternating forest and open terrain. At the first crossing with a green-marked route, stay on the brown trail. A little further on you reach a second, clearer junction where the brown markings continue towards Begovitsa Hut.

At this second junction, leave the brown trail and turn left onto the green markings towards the Chairski Lakes and Tevno Ezero.

The path gradually descends towards the Bashliytsa River. After crossing the river, the main sustained ascent of the second stage begins. The trail initially passes through dwarf pine before entering increasingly open high-mountain terrain.

Follow the green markings into the Chairski cirque and past the Chairski Lakes. This is one of the most scenic parts of the entire traverse. In fog, however, navigation through the lake cirque can become difficult.

Beyond the lakes climb towards the high saddle known as Chairski Pass or Prevala. Here the green trail meets the main red-marked E4 high-mountain route.

Turn onto the red markings towards Tevno Ezero. From this point the remaining route crosses exposed and increasingly rocky high terrain.

Continue towards Mozgovishka Porta. Do not take the blue trail descending towards the Prevalski Lakes and Demyanitsa Hut. Remain on the red markings towards Tevno Ezero.

Beyond Mozgovishka Porta, the trail traverses below the slopes of Valyavishki Chukar. The terrain is rocky and exposed to wind, with impressive views towards Kamenitsa, Yalovarnika, Zabat and Kuklite in clear weather.

The final section gradually enters the Mozgovishki cirque. Tevno Ezero eventually appears ahead, with Tevno Ezero Shelter standing directly beside the lake and marking the end of the route.

Peak Legend

An old Pirin legend, recorded in several versions, is associated with the area of Sinanitsa, Gergiytsa and Muratov Peak. In one version cited by Nikolay Dautov, Gergiytsa flees from Murat Bey and dies; from an amulet around her neck, he realizes that she is his sister and that Sinanitsa is the name of their mother. Other versions rearrange the names of the characters, so the story should be regarded as a folk legend rather than a historical fact.
