Route
Kuklite Peak (2,686 m) and Zabat Peak (2,688 m) are two of the most distinctive rocky summits on the Kamenitsa side ridge of Pirin. Seen from the Begovitsa Valley, their sharp profiles rise high above the forest and dwarf pine.
The hike gradually moves from the green valley around Begovitsa Hut to moraines, open grassy slopes and finally a rugged rocky crest. The contrast between the valley and the upper mountain is one of the most beautiful features of the route.
In clear weather, the summits offer views toward Yalovarnika, Kamenitsa, Begovishko Lake, Bashmandra and the deep southern valleys of Pirin.
Once the marked tourist trails are left behind, the terrain becomes more serious and requires experience with navigation and movement over rock.
Access
From Begovitsa Hut, start on the trail marked with both blue and yellow markings. After the routes separate, continue on the yellow-marked trail in the direction of Pirin Hut. The trail passes through the area of Kuklensko Lake and then climbs toward the saddle between Kuklite and Zabat. At the saddle, leave the coloured hiking marking. When arriving from Begovitsa Hut, Kuklite is to the right and Zabat is to the left. First continue toward Kuklite over the unmarked rocky ridge. After reaching Kuklite, return to the saddle and continue in the opposite direction toward Zabat. Allow approximately 2:30 h from Begovitsa Hut to Kuklite and approximately another 30 minutes to add Zabat. Beyond the saddle there is no standard coloured hiking marking, and the GPX track should be used only as a navigation aid rather than as a substitute for assessing the terrain and current conditions.
BGMountainGuide
“Kukla” is an old mountain term used for a bare peak, a high stone or a rock formation. This is how the unusual rocky ridge came to be called Kuklite. The neighboring Zabat is a newer independent name and, in older descriptions, was regarded as part of the same massif.
Navigation
Popina Laka / Yane Sandanski Hut – a possible starting area for the walking approach toward Begovitsa Hut.
Begovitsa Hut – start of the main ascent toward Kuklite and Zabat.
Blue-yellow marking – both trail markings initially follow the same path.
Trail junction – after the routes separate, continue on the yellow marking toward Pirin Hut.
Kuklensko Lake – an important landmark before the steeper ascent toward the saddle.
Kuklite–Zabat saddle – leave the coloured hiking marking here. Zabat is to the left and Kuklite is to the right when arriving from Begovitsa Hut.
Kuklite – first summit objective, reached over an unmarked rocky ridge.
Return to the saddle – after visiting Kuklite, return along the same unmarked section.
Zabat – second summit objective; allow approximately another 30 minutes after Kuklite.
Return route – descend back to the saddle and follow the yellow-marked trail toward Begovitsa Hut.
💧 Water: fill up at Begovitsa Hut before the climb. There is no dependable drinking-water source on the high section toward Kuklite and Zabat; lake and stream water should be treated.
