About this place
Strashnoto Lake is one of the most recognisable lakes in the Malyovitsa section of Rila. It lies high among the steep rocky slopes of the Kupenite peaks and Popova Kapa.
Its dark water, rugged granite walls and high-alpine setting give the lake a dramatically different character from Rila's gentler lake cirques.
Access
CLASSIC APPROACH: One of the most popular routes starts from the Malyovitsa resort and training-centre area and passes via Yonchevo Lake.
TO YONCHEVO LAKE: Follow the green hiking markings toward Yonchevo Lake.
YONCHEVO – STRASHNOTO LAKE: Continue from Yonchevo on the blue-marked trail. The terrain becomes higher, rockier and considerably steeper.
TIME: The section from Yonchevo Lake to Strashnoto Lake normally takes approximately 1.5 hours in snow-free summer conditions.
CAUTION: The final approach is considerably rougher than the trail to Yonchevo and requires sturdy footwear and care on rocky terrain.
WINTER: With snow present, this becomes serious winter mountain terrain and the summer route must not be followed automatically.
