About this place
Dalgoto Banderishko Lake is one of the larger and most impressive lakes in the Banderishki cirque. It lies high in the valley at an elevation of 2,310 m and is also known as Upper Banderishko Lake.
Its Bulgarian name means 'The Long Lake' and comes from the strongly elongated shape of the basin. The lake stretches between steep granite slopes and high alpine terraces deep inside one of Pirin's most scenic glacial cirques.
Because of its higher position and longer approach from Vihren Hut, the surroundings have a distinctly more remote high-mountain character than the lower Banderishki Lakes.
Access
BEST APPROACH: The main starting point is Vihren Hut. The route heads south into the Banderishki cirque and initially follows the same approach used for Zhabeshko Lake.
START OF THE HIKE: From Vihren Hut, follow the marked hiking trail into the Banderitsa valley. The trail passes through the Ravnako area and gradually begins to gain elevation.
INTO THE UPPER CIRQUE: Beyond Ravnako, the terrain alternates between grassy sections, rocks, small rocky thresholds and dwarf pine. Ribno Banderishko Lake remains lower and west of the main trail.
ZHABESHKO LAKE: After a short steeper and rockier section, the trail reaches the high terrace containing Zhabeshko Lake. This is an important landmark and a good place for a short break.
THE JUNCTION: Beyond Zhabeshko Lake, the main trail continues toward Todorina Porta and Demyanitsa Hut. For Dalgoto Banderishko Lake, follow the marked branch leading farther south and southwest into the cirque.
FINAL APPROACH: From the Zhabeshko Lake area, approximately 10–15 minutes of walking remain. After a short ascent, the terrain opens and the northern end of the long lake basin comes into view.
TIME: Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes from Vihren Hut in one direction. Actual time depends on pace, breaks and conditions on the rocky sections.
DIFFICULTY: In dry summer conditions the hike is of moderate difficulty. The standard approach to the lake contains no technical climbing, but the route is longer, gains elevation and crosses uneven high-mountain terrain.
NAVIGATION: There are several route directions in the area above Zhabeshko Lake. Follow the trail markings and the BGMountains map carefully, particularly in fog or low cloud.
IF CONTINUING BEYOND THE LAKE: The route toward Glavnishka Porta enters significantly more serious terrain. Beyond the lake there is a large rocky passage followed by steeper sections where the markings must be followed carefully. This terrain is not part of the shorter hike whose destination is only the lake.
EQUIPMENT: Carry sturdy hiking footwear, sufficient water, sun protection, waterproof clothing and a warm layer. The lake is high and exposed, and weather in the upper cirque can change rapidly.
WINTER CONDITIONS: This description applies to snow-free terrain. When snow is present, the area requires suitable winter experience, equipment and an assessment of avalanche conditions. Do not automatically use the summer trail as a winter route.
